Chapter One Hundred and Two

Siv’s march left no room for hesitation. Tyra admired her for that. Someday, she wanted to be able to walk that way too. To lead someone this confidently when they both knew the danger that lay ahead. Siv and Tyra were being hunted, and gods and valkyries didn’t give up.

‘We’re nearly there,’ Siv said. She walked straight through the mist. It didn’t in the least hinder her. Tyra had to walk fast to not lose sight of Siv and get lost. Strangely, she remembered the time in the snow storm when they had first walked through the passage grave.

Suddenly, Siv stopped walking.

Tyra tiptoed to the side so she stood next to Siv, and could see what Siv did. A woman was standing in front of them, half hidden in the morning mist.

‘You cannot come here,’ the woman said in a coarse voice that belonged to an old woman. ‘Go back.’ Her face was hidden in the shadows of a hood and a single lock of long blonde hair escaped. She was short, compared to Siv, but she had as much presence.

‘Long time,’ Siv said without the least bit of worry over the cold welcome the woman had given them. ‘Where are your sisters, Verthandi?’

Tyra stared up at the hooded woman with new understanding. So, this was one of the three nornir who spun fates and destinies, and somehow Siv knew her. Siv knew everyone.

‘They’re working,’ the norn replied. ‘Always working.’

‘To what end?’ Siv casually asked.

‘The same one as you.’

‘I doubt it.’

‘You can’t be here,’ the woman repeated. Her voice had softened, and she tilted her head slightly to the side. She seemed to speak out of concern, as if she and Siv had used to be friends and there was some sort of bond there that she wished to protect. ‘You know that.’

The mist began to clear and Tyra was certain it did so on Siv’s command.

‘You look to the future too, sometimes,’ Siv said. ‘Don’t you?’

The norn neither confirmed nor denied that, so Tyra supposed that it was the truth. Siv always knew what was true and what wasn’t. Though the stories said that it was Skuld who saw the future, while Verthandi saw the present, and Urd saw the past.

‘So you know what I will do if you do not lead me to your hall.’

The norn glanced to Tyra and then up at Siv again. ‘Blood dripping over the threads, seeping out of the hall. Odin’s servants flayed and stripped. You wouldn’t… No one could…’

Siv smiled a wicked smile, and had Tyra not been standing at her side and had she not known Siv, she might have been scared. Standing there next to her, she almost felt scared of Siv. She was so superior, and so certain of herself.

‘Your future doesn’t show you what I might do,’ Siv said. ‘It shows you what I will do. Unless you change your mind and thereby change the future. What I ask of you is not a difficult task.
